LA RÉSURRECTION D'HASSAN (STA)
With passion, the three members of the Harting family make a living singing a cappella ballads in the Montreal metro. All three are blind and haunted by the tragic drowning death of the only seeing member of their family, Hassan. Enter Russian mystic and cult-like leader Grigori Petrovich Grabovoi, who promises to help his followers regenerate and resurrect the dead. For the Hartings, Hassan’s resurrection is their only hope for completing their family once more. With intimate access and unflinching observations, the film chronicles the Hartings’ attempts at dealing with their collective grief. What emerges is a highly unusual family portrait of three complex yet lovable characters.

DUEL
Driving down a deserted Southern California highway at a safe and sane 55 miles per hour, David Mann (Dennis Weaver) steps on the pedal to pass a large gas trailer truck. Moments later, the truck is back, dangerously tailgating Mann before abruptly cutting him off. For the next 90 minutes, Mann and the never-seen truckdriver are pitted against one another in a motorized duel to the death. Author Richard Matheson conceived Duel after a similar experience with a reckless trucker.

The story first appeared in Playboy magazine, then was picked up for adaptation by the producers of The ABC Movie of the Week. The director chosen to helm Duel on location in Soledad Canyon was a bright 23-year-old who'd shown promise on such series as Night Gallery and Columbo: Steven Spielberg. First telecast on December 18, 1971, Duel was so popular that a somewhat longer version (with added violence and profanity) was prepared for theatrical release in 1983.

LA FLUTE ENCHANTÉE
Mozart’s glorious opera The Magic Flute is brought enchantingly to life in David McVicar’s production with beautiful sets by John Macfarlane. Prince Tamino promises the Queen of the Night that he will rescue her daughter Pamina from the enchanter Sarastro. He begins his quest, accompanied by the bird-catcher Papageno – but all is not as it seems… David McVicar’s classic production embraces both the seriousness and comedy of Mozart’s work. The audience is transported to a fantastical world of dancing animals, flying machines and dazzlingly starry skies.

The setting provides a wonderful backdrop for Mozart’s kaleidoscopic score, from the Queen of the Night’s coloratura fireworks to Tamino and Pamina’s lyrical love duets and Papageno’s hearty, folksong-like arias. As well as being a comedy The Magic Flute is an expression of Mozart’s profound spiritual beliefs: Enlightenment concerns with the search for wisdom and virtue are at the heart of this enchanting tale. The Magic Flute was an instant success with audiences and Mozart’s supposed rival Salieri described it as an ‘operone’ – a great opera.

LET THERE BE LIGHT
What if we told you there was a way to build an artificial star on Earth? This isn’t science fiction. Rather, it is what ITER (the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) is working on, in the southern French countryside. Assembling scientists from 37 different countries, ITER’s utopian project is very much like the building of a cathedral; so long and arduous that many of its key players might not see it to the end. Nonetheless, they persevere. Because, the project’s success would supply mankind with a perpetual source of clean energy for hundreds, thousands, perhaps millions of years to come. If it fails, there is simply no going back: mankind must prove today that it has the intelligence to prevent its own extinction.

With LET THERE BE LIGHT, directors Mila Aung-Thwin and Van Royko invite you to the outer limits of the renewable energy discourse: nuclear fusion, a potentially world-changing alternative to fossil fuel – nothing short of harnessing the power of the Sun on Earth. Told with a fascinating clarity, and punctuated by gorgeous animated sequences bringing to life many of the eccentric inventors and milestone developments that bring us to ITER’s story today, LET THERE BE LIGHT takes us through 60 years of defiance and invention. It is the rare kind of environmental documentary to tackle the issue of energy, not with a doomsday-clock tone, but rather with a realistic and inspiring assessment of the challenges that will be necessary to escape our fate, and reach for the future. In short: a must-see for the “sci-” and the “sci-fi” minded alike. - FANTASIA 2017

THE LITTLE HOURS
Medieval nuns Alessandra (Alison Brie), Fernanda (Aubrey Plaza), and Ginevra (Kate Micucci) lead a simple life in their convent. Their days are spent chafing at monastic routine, spying on one another, and berating the estate’s day laborer. After a particularly vicious insult session drives the peasant away, Father Tommasso (John C. Reilly) brings on new hired hand Massetto (Dave Franco), a virile young servant forced into hiding by his angry lord. Introduced to the sisters as a deaf-mute to discourage temptation, Massetto struggles to maintain his cover as the repressed nunnery erupts in a whirlwind of pansexual horniness, substance abuse, and wicked revelry.

A GHOST STORY (STF) ►Dernière semaine◄
With A GHOST STORY, acclaimed director David Lowery (AIN'T THEM BODIES SAINTS, PETE'S DRAGON) returns with a singular exploration of legacy, loss, and the essential human longing for meaning and connection.

Recently deceased, a white-sheeted ghost (Academy Award-winner Casey Affleck) returns to his suburban home to console his bereft wife (Academy Award-nominee Rooney Mara), only to find that in his spectral state he has become unstuck in time, forced to watch passively as the life he knew and the woman he loves slowly slip away. Increasingly unmoored, the ghost embarks on a cosmic journey through memory and history, confronting life's ineffable questions and the enormity of existence. An unforgettable meditation on love and grief, A GHOST STORY emerges ecstatic and surreal - a wholly unique experience that lingers long after the credits roll.
