BOYS DON’T CRY

Séance 16mm présentée par LE CINÉ-CLUB DE MONTRÉAL (THE FILM SOCIETY OF MONTREAL), suivie d'une discussion avec la réalisatrice Ariane Louis-Seize (VAMPIRE HUMANISTE CHERCHE SUICIDAIRE CONSENTANT). 

Inspiré de faits vécus, BOYS DON’T CRY raconte la vie de Brandon Teena, né Teena Brandon, un homme transgenre pour qui la transition de genre a été lourde de conséquences. Le personnage complexe mis en scène par Kimberly Peirce dans ce drame sans pareil est d’autant plus émouvant et d’actualité, 25 ans après sa sortie.

En surface, il s’agit d’une histoire d’amour entre deux mésadaptés, qui sont pris dans un petit village campagnard du Nebraska, qui servira de microcosme représentant la fermeture d’esprit de la société étatsunienne. Comme de fait, la tragédie de Brandon aurait pu se dérouler n’importe où. Le film traite de la pathologie de l’homophobie, de la transphobie, de la misogynie et la haine de tout ce qui est différent. Tout à l’honneur de la cinéaste, le film n’aborde pas les explications simplistes que la psychologie Freudienne aurait pu fournir en ce qui a trait au comportement jugé « bizarre et déviant » de Brandon Teena, ce qui évite de le mythifier.

À noter, pour une évaluation rétroactive : Lorsqu’on a remis en question sa décision d’embaucher Hilary Swank, une femme cisgenre hétérosexuelle pour incarner le rôle, la réalisatrice Kimberly Peirce a répondu : « J’ai passée en audition toutes les actrices lesbiennes et transgenre que j’ai pu trouver. Elles étaient bonnes, mais aucune n’arrivait à faire ce qu’Hilary a pu accomplir. » Swank a remporté un Oscar pour sa performance et le film a remporté plus de 40 autres prix. Présentatrice invitée spéciale : Ariane Louis-Seize, réalisatrice talentueuse, fait son entrée dans le cinéma avec son court-métrage primé La peau sauvage (2016), qui a été présenté en première mondiale au TIFF et a voyagé à travers plus de 50 festivals. En 2023, elle réalise son premier long-métrage, Vampire humaniste cherche suicidaire consentant, qui remporte le prix de la meilleure réalisation à la Mostra de Venise. Invité par CFS, Ariane a sélectionné BOYS DON'T CRY pour une projection spéciale et partagera l'impact personnel du film sur elle, en soulignant son évolution dans un contexte social différent.

Based on a heart-breaking true story, BOYS DON’T CRY was adapted from the life of Brandon Teena, born Teena Brandon, a transgender man who chose to live her life as a man and suffered tragic consequences as a result.  The complex protagonist of Kimberly Peirce’s superlative dramatic feature has only made her story more chilling, more compelling–and more relevant 25 years after its release.

At the most obvious level, it is a tender love story between two outcasts, stuck in the crudest and most stifling White Trash surroundings in Nebraska. The film deals with the pathology of homophobia, misogyny, and hatred of anything that’s different, using the heartland as a microcosm for American society, hence suggesting that Brandon’s tragedy could have taken place anywhere. It’s a tribute to the filmmakers’ intelligence that they don’t offer simplistic Freudian or other psychological explanations for the “bizarre and deviant” conduct of Brandon Teena. Nor do they mythologize him. 

A note to modern critics: Explaining in 1999 why she had opted for a straight actress, Hilary Swank, to play the lead, director Kimberly Peirce has said: “I auditioned every butch lesbian and transsexual actor I could find and they were great, but they couldn’t pull off the role the way Hilary did.”  Swank won an Oscar for her performance and the film went on to win over forty awards elsewhere. Special Guest presenter: Ariane Louis-Seize, a talented filmmaker, made her mark in cinema with her award-winning short La peau sauvage (2016), which premiered at TIFF and traveled to over 50 festivals. In 2023, she released her first feature film, Vampire humaniste cherche suicidaire consentant, which won the Best Director award at the Venice Film Festival. Invited by CFS, Ariane selected BOYS DON'T CRY for a special screening, where she will share the personal impact the film had on her, highlighting its evolution in a different social context.
