Le jeune Sailor, acoquiné à une bande de gangsters, est amoureux de Lula, la fille d'une femme cruelle, Marietta. Celle-ci met un tueur à ses trousses, mais Sailor est plus rapide et l'élimine le premier. Mis en prison, il en sort trois ans plus tard pour s'enfuir avec Lula sous d'autres cieux. Mais Marietta n'est pas désarmée, et lance à leur poursuite un détective un peu cinglé et un amant racketter. Sailor et Lula s'arrêtent dans un village du Texas où le garçon fait alliance avec un certain Peru pour voler une banque, sans savoir que celui-ci est chargé de l'éliminer.

"Wild at Heart est probablement mon film préféré de Lynch (c’est aussi le gagnant d'une Palme d’Or!). Une histoire d’amour brûlante dans un univers violent, avec des clins d’œil au Magicien d’Oz. Le générique d’ouverture et la chanson In the Mood de Glenn Miller qui se transforme en heavy métal nous plongent directement dans l’atmosphère unique du film. Les performances de Laura Dern et de Nicolas Cage sont mémorables."

Sailor and Lula are two lovers struggling to remain together even when fate seems intent on keeping them apart. In this case, fate is Lula's mother, Marietta Fortune; a desperate woman who hates Sailor and will do anything to keep him away from her daughter. After Sailor is released from prison for murdering a man in self-defence, he and Lula embark on a sex-filled, rocking road trip, aware all the time that they are being hunted by Marietta's cronies.

“Wild at Heart is probably my favourite Lynch film (it also won the Palme d’Or!). A scorching love story in a violent world, with nods to The Wizard of Oz. The opening credits and Glenn Miller’s In the Mood transforming into heavy metal instantly set the mood of this unique film. Laura Dern and Nicolas Cage’s performances are iconic.”
