Keen to deconstruct stereotypes linked to the image of Black women, filmmaker Ayana O’Shun interviews several women who shed light on the history of these stereotypes and their frustrating and painful impact on their lives. Although these stereotypes stem from slavery, the imagery responsible for driving them is still present in today’s media representations of Black women. Its survival contributes to the revolting normalization of racist and sexist behaviours. Through testimonies and archival images, The Myth of the Black Woman takes the shape of an investigation that also reveals a portrait of engaging, passionate and outraged women.

In a small Indian village, Ranjit wakes up to find that his 13-year-old daughter has not returned from a family wedding. A few hours later, she’s found stumbling home. After being dragged into the woods, she was raped by three men. Ranjit goes to the police, and the men are arrested. But Ranjit’s relief is short-lived, as the villagers and their leaders launch a sustained campaign to force the family to drop the charges. A cinematic documentary, To Kill a Tiger follows Ranjit’s uphill battle to find justice for his child. In India, where a rape is reported every 20 minutes and conviction rates are less than 30 percent, Ranjit’s decision to support his daughter is virtually unheard of. With tremendous access, we witness the emotional journey of an ordinary man facing extraordinary circumstances. A father whose love for his daughter forces a social reckoning that will reverberate for years to come.
TO KILL A TIGER deals with a highly sensitive subject matter. While Ranjit’s daughter’s identity is carefully revealed within the context of the film, out of caution and respect for her and the family’s privacy, we kindly request that her name or any identifying image not be used in any press coverage or social media. The filmmaker recommends that “Ranjit’s daughter” or the pseudonym “J” be used as alternatives. We thank you for your understanding.
This film deals with highly sensitive subject matter and contains descriptions of sexual violence, which may be disturbing for some viewers. Please exercise care and compassion for yourself and your fellow audience members.
The survivor you’re about to see on screen is now over the age of 18 and has consented to her identity being revealed in the context of this documentary. She did so in the hope that her story will help other girls and families in similar situations. Out of respect for her and her family’s privacy, we kindly request that her name and identifying images not be shared outside the cinema. Thank you for your understanding.

This heartbreakingly beautiful indictment of 1950s American mores by Douglas Sirk follows the blossoming love between a well-off widow (Jane Wyman) and her handsome and earthy younger gardener (Rock Hudson). When their romance prompts the scorn of her children and country club friends, she must decide whether to pursue her own happiness or carry on a lonely, hemmed-in existence for the sake of the approval of others. With the help of ace cinematographer Russell Metty, Sirk imbues nearly every shot with a vivid and distinct emotional tenor. A profoundly felt film about class and conformity in small-town America, All That Heaven Allows is a pinnacle of expressionistic Hollywood melodrama.

STARCRASH is simply the best STAR WARS knockoff. For starters, Italian director Luigi Cozzi was only vaguely interested in ripping off Lucas. For every $100k less they had in budget, they added colored lights — making for an eye-popping, swirling universe more resembling a lava lamp than a Flash Gordon serial. There’s also stop-motion Harryhausen monsters, sword-fighting clockwork machines and other devastating intergalactic gibberish.
Then there's the cast: former Bond girl Caroline Munro (THE SPY WHO LOVED ME) leads a motley crew including child evangelical / scam artist / hippie icon Marjoe Gortner as a perma-permed Luke Skywalker clone, Oscar-winning Christopher Plummer as The Emperor of the Galaxy (who refuses to act), David Hasselhoff (“Baywatch”) and creepy MANIAC Joe Spinell.
Plus bikini-wearing Amazons and a robot with a Texas accent. What a trippy-ass package!
