Pain and Glory (STA)
Pain and Glory tells of a series of reencounters experienced by Salvador Mallo, a film director in his physical decline. Some of them in the flesh, others remembered: his childhood in the 60s, when he emigrated with his parents to a village in Valencia in search of prosperity, the first desire, his first adult love in the Madrid of the 80s, the pain of the breakup of that love while it was still alive and intense, writing as the only therapy to forget the unforgettable, the early discovery of cinema, and the void, the infinite void that creates the incapacity to keep on making films. Pain and Glory talks about creation, about the difficulty of separating it from one's own life and about the passions that give it meaning and hope. In recovering his past, Salvador finds the urgent need to recount it, and in that need he also finds his salvation.

Xalko (STA)
Showing with English subtitles.

Xalko, the birthplace of director Sami Mermer, is a Kurdish village in the heart of Turkish Anatolia. The filmmaker, now living in the West, like so many others, visits his birthplace. He finds Xalko peopled largely with women, along with only a few men who decided to stay. With his codirector, Hind Benchekroun, he shows us “the other side” of migration. Thanks to the directors’ closeness to the people they film, Xalko becomes a chronicle of a way of life threatened by exodus, as well as a powerful portrait of strong women living their lives without men. A homecoming becomes an opportunity for a community to confront the culpability of those who left, and the bitterness – often expressed through sardonic humour – of those who have worked themselves to the bone to keep the village going.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre
Just as Hitchcock's Psycho was based on the life of deeply disturbed farmer Ed Gein, so is this little story of depravity and dementia. When a sister and her brother take a group of friends to visit the farmhouse of their deceased grandfather, they discover that just next door lives a whole family of repugnant psycho killers. Most noteworthy is "Leatherface" who is the bloke who wields the power saw and has a penchant for human flesh. Though the film did not enjoy immediate success at the box office, it has since gathered a hefty cult following. Directed by Tobe Hooper, Texas Chainsaw Massacre is considered by many to be groundbreaking work in the genre of horror.

Parasite (STA)
Bong Joon Ho brings his work home to Korea in this pitch-black modern fairytale. Meet the Park Family: the picture of aspirational wealth. And the Kim Family, rich in street smarts but not much else. Masterminded by college-aged Ki-woo, the Kim children expediently install themselves as tutor and art therapist, to the Parks. Soon, a symbiotic relationship forms between the two families. The Kims provide "indispensable" luxury services while the Parks obliviously bankroll their entire household. When a parasitic interloper threatens the Kims' newfound comfort, a savage, underhanded battle for dominance breaks out, threatening to destroy the fragile ecosystem between the Kims and the Parks.

Trous de cul, une théorie (STF)
With venomous social media, resurgent authoritarianism and rampant narcissism threatening to trash civilization as we know it, the time has come for Assholes: A Theory—an entertaining and oh-so-timely feature doc from acclaimed director John Walker.

Inspired by Aaron James’ New York Times bestseller of the same name, Assholes investigates the breeding grounds of contemporary “asshole culture” and locates signs of civility in an otherwise rude-’n-nasty universe.

Venturing into predominantly male domain, Walker moves from Ivy League frat clubs to the bratty princedoms of Silicon Valley and bear pits of international finance. Why do assholes thrive in certain environments? What explains their perverse appeal? And how do they keep getting elected!

The World according to Amazon (STA)
In 1994, in a Seattle garage, Jeff Bezos created a bookstore. 25 years later, his company owns over 250 warehouses, ships 14 million parcels a day and dominates the market in five continents. The World According to Amazon pulls back the curtain on Bezos’ monolith and how it’s discretely taken over our lives. If the world’s first centi-billionaire has his way, his company will become the only one we’ll ever need.

That is if it doesn’t destroy us first. Staff in Amazon’s 250 warehouses are required to behave like robots, According to a Polish employee, “you work as a machine but you are also controlled by machines. This is something scary.” Scarier still is the state of emergency the Seattle government called on homelessness since Amazon took over one fifth of the downtown area. Filling up their shiny high rises are tens of thousands of executives, all who need homes, causing rents to skyrocket and a 600% increase in residents living on the streets.

But for Bezos, dominating a city or the world is not enough, and so he’s turned his attention to the skies, or, more specifically, the cloud. Amazon is the leader in online data storage infrastructure. 70% of the world's Internet travels through just one of Amazon’s 120 data centres in Northern Virginia.

The World According to Amazon explores how a single company controls the distribution of all our daily products, the infrastructure of our economy, and the data that defines us. Out of the mouths of Amazon workers in Germany, small business owners in India and even an executive who worked in Bezos’ garage, we learn the truth behind this global empire, and the disturbing future Amazon has in store for us.
